It is funny.

NTU in the top 1% of the world’s universities
NTU, Singapore’s science and technology university, is in the top 1% of the world's universities and in the company of excellent institutions such as Washington University in St Louis, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Utrecht University (which has recently won Nobel Prizes), and Uppsala University (which has over the last century produced five Nobel laureates).

YAY GUYS REJOICE!! WE ARE THE TOP 1!!!
There is obviously a fascination and promotional gimmick that harbours upon the numerical 1. and it must be that whole number. In my years of study of Mathematics, I used to learn even in primary school that top 0.1% is higher than 1%. In the first place, i dont think we have only 7000 universities in the world do we?(The university moves up four notches from 77th to 73rd position in the 2009 Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.) Why then do we pride ourselves against a disadvantaged base. Alright I think I get it - the numerical 1 is the one we are looking for. Since we are not the top, no anywhere near it, let us see how we cud make that number 1 appear! Tada! Right, we are the top 1_ university now and we must seek to improve right! Ah yes, improve so that we can now become the 0.1%! But then later if we not number 1, den we just adjust the base again to become 1%! THEN HOW TO IMPROVE? Oh dont worry, doesnt this give us breathing space hehe. OKOK. WE MUST IMPROVE OUR POSITION NO MATTER WAD. Yes, onward we march on to 'tommorrow'. (:
