while the world races by
we are often swept by
not knowing when to ask for help

on how we should slow it down

i am officially 2 papers to the USA!
alright, that is pretty misleading but here's a better frame of events. it is exactly 33 days to departure where a 7 month journey will begin.
i cant help but look at it like a loserly escapade to somewhere else that can better appreciate the escapist in me. but hasnt that always been the founding principle of travel?

i am in the midst of settling my accomodation over in the Michigan and have already decided to take a double room in this beautiful co-operative house smack in the middle of central campus. just in case i got lost, i google-mapped it to make sure that i recognise the street view so it comes in handy when i head over all alone in december. i cannot tell you how fun it seems and how different it is going to be. you could check out the facebook group of the house i am going to stay for the next 5 months here. it is really a big big chance to interact with different people and community and put my egoistic and sometimes reserved personality to the test. no i do not mean shedding the true shell and party in birthday suits but more of opening up to such a different culture and through whatever, interact with them and see how i can be a little wheenie bit more exciting in time to come :p
my mom is in a perpetual flurry these few days, scurrying to gather all sorts of information ranging from medication, what type of flu jabs, luggage, what winter wear is suitable and all the other comfortable items that i should need. i don't remember her learning so much in such a short time. soon she would be learning about the webcam and skype and facebook so that she will be in constant contact with me however much i want to shed some of this sheltered contact. but of course, in this motherly love, it is always the only thing you want to seek above everything else but for now, i would just like to take this small little chance and be independent - doing everything else myself.
i am still in the midst of a freaking long examination period that spans like what, 1 month? and thanks to the very eager aerospace cohort who does everything 'inflatedly', i am forced peer pressure to keep it up. so my preparations have been almost at standstill and there's nothing much done except that i just got my university of michigan email sorted out so i kind of have a freaking cool @umich.edu mail. anyway, i've been in need of a quick checklist of what else i need to settle so here's a chance to list them quickly.
  1. get my dell laptop warranty renewed just in case it dies on me halfway
  2. see if there's any cheap d90 and 10-24mm deal so i can upgrade my photographic gear
  3. buy afew sticks of memory cards(thanks to exams the SITEX is ongoing without me)
  4. scout for a good and cheap camcorder so that i can record plenty of memories home
  5. get a waterproof toiletries kit for easy grab-and-go while travel
  6. get my travel security stuff from marina square traveller's square
  7. buy a decent luggage that can roll around pretty easily and not look so expensive such that im the only target when i touchdown in no man's land
  8. test on my winter wears and make sure i know what is what before i end up being drop dead in the cold when i reach
  9. get a nice sling bag that looks freaking rugged so that it hides my dslrs nicely for travels
  10. buy my travel insurance
  11. get myself vaccinated against all kinds of diseases
  12. open a OUB student account so that i can withdraw cash without penalty overseas
  13. get the phone number of my friend who is hosting me in london for 1 day while i am on transit on 30th dec (THANK YOU PQ)
  14. meet up with my LSE friend when he is back in Singapore in December and discuss the June plans proper
  15. buy a webcam so that i can see home
  16. make sure the house desktop is in pristine condition as much as possible before i leave.
  17. discuss with my family the code of communication and the what-ifs if any mode of communication fails
that's a pretty impressive lot to settle in the month of december not considering my hall's commitment for Inter Hall games and the many other outings to come.
alright!

i must admit that i will be dead scared the night when i leave my comfort and board the 2am qatar flight that departs singapore. from then on, i am really really alone for once in my entire life. everything will change.

change

like they always say, travelling gives you a chance to shed your true self and take on a different persona. ok, whatever that negative connotation it may bring, to me it is only positive and i still cannot wait to get out of here.
